Lieutenant John Havenar has been with the Colorado Springs Police Department since 2002. Throughout his career he has served as a patrol officer, counter-sniper as a member of the Tactical Enforcement Unit (SWAT), homicide detective, patrol sergeant, Robbery Unit sergeant, patrol lieutenant, and lieutenant of the Professional Development Section.

As a tactical enforcement officer, he participated in over 700 tactical operations as well as providing security for numerous dignitary visits to include the President of the United States. His responsibilities as the Professional Development Lieutenant have been to oversee the department’s (CALEA) national accreditation standards as well as policies and procedures. He oversees the ongoing training for the department’s 800 incumbent officers. He is responsible for training newly promoted sergeants and lieutenants and developed a mentorship program to assist them in their new responsibilities. He also manages the department’s peer support and wellness program that offers support to the department’s sworn and civilian staff. John has received numerous awards and commendations throughout his career to include a Medal of Valor and Life Saving award.

While not at work, John and his wife keep busy with their very active 4 children and 1 grandchild. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
