Tanto si está explorando sus opciones profesionales como si ya ha decidido su trayectoria profesional, la conexión con profesionales experimentados puede ayudarle a impulsar una carrera profesional de éxito. Se nos ha aconsejado "preparar todo lo necesario". ¿Desea desarrollar una carrera orientada a la consecución de objetivos, económicamente gratificante y atractiva? Considering Your Personal Purpose

Beginning one’s career can often be a difficult time filled with challenging questions. Which job offer should I accept? Am I pursuing the right career? How difficult will it be for me to adjust to a new town when starting my new job? What does the future hold for me? These types of questions can often prove taxing and require considerable thought and reflection.

Life can be distracting. Just when you think that you have a plan in place, things can change. You find that someone special and his or her career plans conflict with your goals. You have a great job and love where you live, but now may need to move to further your spouse’s career.

When choosing your career, it may be helpful for you to begin with the end goal in mind and ask yourself the following questions:

What is the purpose of my life?
What type of life do I want to life?
What do I need to do to create this type of life?
What are my long-term goals?
How will this job or career help me to achieve my long-term goals?
How can my talents and gifts be used to bless the lives of others?
How can I maintain a positive attitude during my job search?
How can I achieve a well-balanced life?

Having a clear and solid understanding of why you are living your life the way you are can give you peace, clarity, and solace—both in hard times and in times of serenity.

Here are a few tips for considering your own personal purpose:

- Look inward
  - Everyone has been blessed with unique talents and characteristics and has a unique destiny and role to play in the grand scheme of the world. Look inward to see what gifts and talents you’ve been given and how you can change the world for the better.
- Prayerfully ask God
  - He has a plan for you. You may already understand the basic purpose of your life, but He can enlighten your understanding and inspire you to greater knowledge of what you can do and how you can bless the lives of those around you.
- Listen to the Spirit and follow His direction
- Study the scriptures
  - The scriptures are the word of God, and through the stories and doctrine found in the scriptures, God has given us a guidebook on what life is all about and how to live and find your purpose.
- Study your Patriarchal Blessing
  - Consider the guidance and insights your Patriarchal Blessing gives you in determining your life’s purpose and goals.
- Journal your impressions
  - Write down the impressions that you received while doing each of the steps above.
- Consider what will bring you true happiness

We can enjoy our work. Our attitude about work is very important. To some people work is drudgery. To others it is an exciting part of life. One way to enjoy life’s fullest benefits is to learn to love work.

The following story shows how one man saw beyond his daily labor. A traveler passed a stone quarry and saw three men working. He asked each man what he was doing. Each man’s answer revealed a different attitude toward the same job. “I am cutting stone,” the first man answered. The second replied, “I am earning three gold pieces per day.” The third man smiled and said, “I am helping to build a house of God.”

It is important to keep a balance in life between work, recreation, and rest. We should each find the proper balance between work, recreation, and rest. There is an old saying: “Doing nothing is the hardest work of all, because one can never stop to rest.” Without work, rest and relaxation have no meaning.

Not only is it pleasant and necessary to rest, but we are commanded to rest on the Sabbath day (see Exodus 20:10; D&C 59:9–12). This day of rest after each six days of labor brings refreshment for the days that follow. The Lord also promises the “fullness of the earth” to those who observe the Sabbath day (see D&C 59:16–20; see also chapter 24 in this book).

On other days of the week, in addition to working, we may spend time to improve our talents and enjoy our hobbies, recreation, or other activities that will refresh us.

President David O. McKay said, “Let us realize that the privilege to work is a gift, that the power to work is a blessing, that the love of work is success” (Pathways to Happiness [1957], 381).

Achieving True Wealth

When considering a career choice, many people consider which occupation they can reasonably obtain to reach the highest level of income. It may be easy to confuse the accumulation of material wealth with one’s success in life and long-term happiness. One may believe that achieving success in his or her career and building material wealth will ultimately lead to his or her happiness and the happiness of one’s family.

Instead, consider that wealth comes in many forms. By concentrating your efforts to achieve success in one form of wealth, such as achieving material success, you may under appreciate the other forms of wealth that are necessary to your long-term success and the success of your family. We all know of individuals that have focused the majority of their efforts and energy on building a successful career, only to see other aspects of their lives fall apart.

Think about how the pursuit of a well-balanced individual and family life can lead to building wealth in a variety of forms including:

Spiritual Strength: The relationship that one has with his or her Heavenly Father and with the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The faith and testimony one has in God’s Eternal plan for His children.
Family Members: The members of his or her family, both living and past. The bonds and commitments that tie the family together forever.
Family Happiness: The joy one’s family has by living life fully and richly with a sense of excitement and adventure, sharing time and experiences with one another, and serving God’s purposes.
Family Values: The core values shared as a family driving their ethics, virtues, character, integrity, spirituality, growth, purpose, and actions.
Family Legacy: Family traditions, honor, wisdom, and history. The impact one’s family has made in the world by serving God’s purposes.
Family Trust: The trust, reliance upon, and respect one’s family members have for one another.
Family Communication: A sense of mutual understanding and empathy allowing family members to communicate openly and honestly with one another.
Family Health and Wellness: The physical and emotional health and wellness of the family members.
Family Intellectual Capital: The knowledge and wisdom accumulated and displayed by the family members.
Capacity for Forgiving: The ability of one’s family members to forgive themselves and others for offenses.
Social Family: One’s co-workers, friends, neighbors, fellow church members and other associates that make a difference his or her life.
Philanthropic Capital: The family’s collective capacity for caring for and serving others in the world.
Family Material Capital: The tangible and financial resources used by the family to pursue life to its fullest and to assist others in need. This is the only component of the true wealth of a family that is both temporal and transitory.

Would you be interested in an internship, even if it did not pay?

Self-Discovery: Finding Your Passion

One of the most important decisions you will make in life is choosing a career. If you find a career you love doing, earning a living will become a pleasure and you will be motivated to do your best and excel in your chosen profession. If you don’t find this love, your primary motivation will be earning a paycheck and much of the enjoyment of working and sense of accomplishment will be absent. Your attitude toward your work whether good or bad will affect all the other aspects of your life: marriage, being a parent, service in the community or church, etc.

You owe it to yourself and to your future happiness in life to take the time to find those careers that motivate you to be your best self – to be passionate about what you do!

Growth Projections for Selected Careers

It’s important when selecting a career to be fully aware of the future job growth potential as well as salary possibilities. What could be sadder than to spend four years of college and discover that your selected major or selected career does not sustain a family — or that there are only a few new job openings in that field.

A salary that is livable for a Young Professional may not be adequate for a family. A yearly salary in the mid-twenty thousand may look good – but, the federal government poverty rate for a family of four (two adults, two children) is $24,000.

Some college majors, and some careers, will not support a family! There are college majors that do not lead to sustainable careers and do not generate the funds to pay back Young Professional loans! Other careers may pay well but are fields that are not growing and are difficult to get into.

WOWI

World of Work Incorporated (WOWI) has developed a skills assessment tool (https://www.wowi.com/ ). This one and a half hour online career assessment test measures skills in categories of verbal, numerical, abstractions, spatial-form, mechanical/electrical and organizing skill. It also measures job satisfaction indicators (workplace preferences) such as: isolative, gregarious, dominant, versatile, repetitive, etc.

Having measured skills and workplace preferences, the career assessment tool provides recommendations on career interest areas that would be suitable such as: sciences, public service, managerial, arts, clerical, service, sales, outdoor or industrial.

Finally, the WOWI career assessment provides specific job titles that would work for you based on your skills and workplace preferences. These job titles are organized according to required education and are linked to Department of Labor web sites that provide information on job growth for the next ten years and projected salary information.

The WOWI career assessment is a wonderful tool that provides specific career recommendations and allows you to determine if the projected job growth and job salary are sufficient to allow you to support yourself and a family.

Occupational Outlook Handbook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics “Occupational Outlook Handbook” is available at bls.gov/ooh. This document allows you to select occupations based on entry-level education, median salary, projected growth rate, on-the-job training and projected number of new jobs.

At each specific job title entry the OOH provides details on median pay, entry-level education, number of jobs today, number of jobs in ten years, and job outlook.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook also provides information on the type of tasks that are accomplished in this job, work environment, how to enter the field, pay, job outlook and links to similar occupations.

This document provides excellent information on job growth projection and salary growth.

O*Net Online

O*Net Online is sponsored by the US Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. The website, onetonline.org, organizes careers into categories such as green industry, bright outlook, STEM discipline, job family and job zone.

For each job title, the website lists typical tasks, needed tools and technology, knowledge, skills, abilities, work activities, detailed work activities, work context, job zone, education, credentials, work styles, work values, related occupations, wage/employment trends and current job openings.

This website contains a very thorough description of thousands of job titles and a complete explanation of the tasks, tools and technology used in the job.

Career One Stop

Career One Stop is found at careerinfonet.com. This website contains career videos where people explain their work. There is also an excellent section on education and training options and a section on federal training programs and locating state educational resources.

Occupational information is very comprehensive and is provided state by state. Projected annual growth projections are presented for the U.S and for each state.

Educational resources and recommendations are provided for specific careers.

Majoring in the Humanities

Majoring in the Humanities may make the transition to the workforce challenging. All pathways to a career require diligent preparation and a clear strategy.

It’s crucial to have a plan for developing specific skill-sets which are attractive to employers. Become very familiar with the educational requirements of jobs listed in the Occupational Outlook Handbook or O*Net Online. Develop a firm career path towards specific employment or towards post-graduate school.

Conclusion

It’s important to carefully study career opportunities in respect to future employment projections and in respect to salary (will it support a family). There are a number of very good websites that provide this information. Also, the WOWI career assessment test can be helpful in determining your interests, skills and workplace preferences and providing detailed job recommendations.

As you study career opportunities, include your parents, relatives and others in your deliberations, to seek their wisdom. As you continue to study this decision out in your mind, take your conclusions to Heavenly Father in prayer for affirmation of your career choice. successful career choices consistent with what matters most to you.

Choosing the Right Career

The first thing to do when picking a career is to sincerely pray for help. Acting with faith and guidance from the Holy Ghost is always the best way to make correct decisions. When picking an occupation, consider your likes and abilities. The interests you have will help you determine what you would be happy doing and what you are skilled at. You should determine what kinds of careers require talents and skills like yours. Things to ask:

Where do I want to be in five or ten years?
What kinds of responsibilities do I want?
What kind of job security do I want?
What kinds of advancement opportunities do I want?
What kind of work environment do I want?
Is there work I do not want to do (ex. call center)?
How willing am I to work and study hard?
Do I want to work for someone else or for myself?

You should then determine what kind of education or training a career will require. Things to ask:

How long will it take to train for this career?
Where can I obtain the training?
How difficult will the school/ training program be?
How much work experience will I need to be hired in this career field?
What will it cost to get the needed degree or certificate?
How long will it take to pay off loans for schooling or certification?
What disciplines will I need to know for this career (ex. biology, design principles)?
What kind of personality does this career require (ex. patient, outgoing, etc.)?

You should determine how stable a career will be. Think of the industries connected to a career. Are they companies that will grow with changing technology, or are they dependent on equipment or processes that can become outdated? Things to ask:

Is this career growing, stable, or declining?
Does the job provide something that is always needed?
Could this job be done by a machine?
Is this a new or old industry?
Is there a competing industry?
Will the core skills for this industry be useful in another industry?
What technology does this career use? Could it be outdated soon?

You should determine how much time each day a career will take. Establish your time priorities early. Tough decisions are easier to make when you have a clear perspective of what you are not willing to compromise. Things to ask:

How much time will work take each day?
Where must I live in order to have this career?
How much time will I have for my spouse and children?
How will this career affect my family?
What is the commute time, and what will the travel costs be?

You should determine the approximate income level and benefits associated with a career. Salary is an important part of any career but it is not the only thing. Some people choose careers because of the high annual income only to find they don’t enjoy a major aspect of the profession. This is one reason interviews with professionals or mentors in a given career field or internships in the field are so important. Things to ask:

What are the benefits? Medical coverage?
Will this career allow me to take care of my financial responsibilities?
How long will it take me to find a job after graduation or certification?
How frequent are promotions, advancements?

How Can I Manage My Finances More Effectively?

Some people make relatively little money but are wealthy, while others make large amounts of money but are in grave financial danger. This is because income does not determine wealth. Instead, money management determines wealth.

Observe your finances and spending habits. Identify how you spend money, what you spend it on, and why.
Explore Church resources. Learn more about budgeting, eliminating debt, and planning for the future.
Prepare a budgeting plan. Establishing a budget can help you plan how you will more effectively use your funds and control your spending. The Family Budget Worksheet can help you organize your income and expenses. Kay Przybille’s article, “Stretching Your Dollars,” (Ensign, June 2009, 36–37) can give you practical ideas for saving money and working within your budget.
Create a plan to eliminate your debt. Get rid of your debt more efficiently by first paying off those debts that have higher interest rates or the earliest payoff dates, then paying off debts with lower interest rates or later payoff dates. A Debt-Elimination Calendar can help you organize your debt and make a plan of how and when you will pay it off. “Power Tools for Family Finances” (Ensign, June 2009, 34–35) identifies tools that can help you eliminate debt quicker, including financial calculators.
Avoid new debt. Regardless of how much you earn, find a way to decrease your expenses and live within your means. As you get out of debt, stay out of debt.
Find a mentor. Look for someone who uses his or her money wisely. Learn his or her good spending and saving habits. Ask for advice.
Keep trying. Creating a workable budget does not happen all at once. Exercise patience and persistence as you continue to perfect it. Improving your money management can help you cut back on expenses and give you a few extra dollars. In a year’s time, what seems like a small savings can be significant.

Maintain an eternal perspective. As you work on improving your financial situation, keep an eternal perspective. Identify your priorities and make sure you have them aligned with gospel principles.

To effectively plan your job search, it is important to understand how different industries recruit new employees. Tuning into industries’ and employer’s annual recruitment cycles can be instrumental in your job search. Understanding the recruitment peaks doesn’t mean waiting out the rest of the year. It is important that you are actively seeking employment opportunities, not finding excuses to avoid looking.

For those job candidates graduating from college with undergraduate or graduate degrees that are seeking full-time employment, pay particular attention to the on-campus recruiting calendar of major employers on your campus. This will give you an opportunity to interview with employers without leaving campus.

Summer Jobs/Internships:

For summer positions, some employers with post available opportunities as early as mid-fall quarter of the previous year. Early January is also an active time for employers looking to hire for the summer. Early application submissions are driven by the type of position, location of the position, number of applicants and the number of positions available.

Typical Recruiting Timelines by Industry:

Quarter-By-Quarter Summary of the General Calendar of Most Employers:

First Quarter: A New Year’s Wave of Hiring

Major hiring decisions are made when people are in the office. These follow closely on the heels of the holidays and summer. Big hiring months are January, February, September and October. Strong hiring periods, such as the first quarter, when demand for talent may outweigh the supply of qualified candidates, may be an excellent time for job candidates that are interested in upgrading their job responsibility and pay.

Second Quarter:

Second quarter is an excellent time for hiring for jobs that are dependent upon fair weather outside. The tourism and hospitality industries often hire in the second quarter in preparation for increased summer business. Major industries classified as information, financial services and professional and business services hire heavily in this quarter

Third Quarter: Vacation Time

Hiring tends to slow down in July before picking up in late August. As this is typically a slow time for recruiting, a recruiter may have more time to review a job candidate’s qualifications.

Fourth Quarter: Busy then Slow

The fourth quarter has an increase in hiring for holiday retail employees than a lull during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s period. During the fourth quarter, the supply of active job seekers typically is lower resulting in a higher chance of getting hired by a recruiter that is focused on filling positions before year end.

Deleting Digital Dirt

Job seekers are often judged by what “digital dirt” can be found on them online. Digital dirt is anything posted on the web that portrays you in a negative personal or professional manner.

Many employers complete a Google search of their job applicants, either before or after an interview, to determine the applicant’s online presence. Employers seek to hire people of good character; people that they believe won’t embarrass the company. Upon finding digital dirt, an employer may decide to exclude you from their job candidate search.

Examples of digital dirt can include unflattering photos of you on Facebook, an embarrassing video of you on YouTube, or a blog post in which you said some things that you later regretted. Does your current online image reflect the image that you want a potential employer to have of you?

Ask Yourself

Does online information accurately portray who I am or how I would like others to think of me?
Do I feel comfortable having my current or futures employers, family members, friends or colleagues view this content?
Could this information harm my professional career or future potential?
Does it reveal too much personal information about me that I am uncomfortable sharing with the general public?

If you are uncomfortable with this content then you need to do your best to delete or edit it.

How to Identify Digital Dirt

Conduct search engine queries using your name to see what is out there. Put your name in quotes on Google, Yahoo and Bing to conduct the search. Use every variation of your name and every subcategory such as “web”, “images” and “video.”
Check out your social networking page or blog. Would you want a potential employer to see your pictures or read your blog? Consider deleting this digital dirt and restricting your contacts ability to post pictures or messages to your profile.
Be aware that you may have an evil cybertwin out there. A cybertwin is a person with your same name. If your cybertwin’s online presence is negative, you need to be prepared to explain to a potential employer that that person is not you.
To keep on top of your online identity, you may also want to register for online alerts if you name is mentioned online. Enter your name is quotes and utilize Google Alert, Yahoo Alert and Social Mention. Note that online alerts don’t work well if you have a common name.

Steps to Help You Get Rid of Digital Dirt

Delete as Much of Your Online Dirt as Possible: Get rid of your posts that portray you negatively. If a friend has posted something unbecoming of you or tagged you, ask him or her to remove it.
Update your Friends in Facebook/Twitter and LinkedIn: Review your friends in social media accounts and delete those names that you no longer want to be connected with. Note that when you delete a name from your friends list, that person does not receive a notification.
Bury Your Digital Dirt: If you are unable to delete or edit your digital dirt, you can bury it in the search results. This is accomplished by simply flooding a search of your name with positive online content. Create a blog, Twitter or LinkedIn, Facebook account or post comments on someone else’s social media site.
Adjust Your Social Media Account Privacy Settings: Use customized privacy settings to allow yourself the most control of your profile and how you wish to display your content as public or private.
Create Dual/Multiple Online Identities: Create multiple accounts to reflect your personal and professional identities. The goal is to keep your personal life separate from your professional life.
Avoid Joining Groups or Engaging in Embarrassing or Unprofessional Activities: Avoid overtly controversial activities. Make sure that your posts portray you in an accurate and flattering manner.

Creating Impressive Job Applications

Navigating the Applicant Tracking System (ATS)

The Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is an electronic managing and screening software application used by many employers for their recruitment needs. An ATS may also help employers stay compliant with government hiring rules.

Employers use this application to automate and streamline the recruitment process by filtering through online resumes and applicant information based upon keywords and phrases associated with the job descriptions. These keywords may be skills, former employers, years of experience, schools attended or other criteria. Each keyword or phrase is assigned a scoring number and a resume must achieve a minimum total score in order to be reviewed by a human. Data can be collected from internal applications via the ATS or extracted from applicants on job and resume boards such as Monster.com, Hotjobs, CareerBuilder and Indeed.com. The use of Applicant Tracking Systems has caused many job applicants to adapt resume optimization techniques when creating and formatting their resume.

A problem common with Applicant Tracking Systems is that as many as 75% of qualified applicants are rejected by software application because the resume cannot be read properly. If a job seeker’s resume isn’t formatted the right way and doesn’t contain the right keywords and phrases, the applicant tracking system will misread it and rank it as a bad match with the job opening, regardless of the candidate’s qualifications. It is therefore critical that a job applicant understand how these systems work and how to optimize his or her resume with ATS screening programs in mind.

Tips on Navigating an ATS:

- Don’t send your resume as a PDF: Applicant Tracking Systems lack a standard way to structure PDF documents so they are easily misread. Instead use a .doc, docx, or .txt file type.
- Don’t use tables, graphics or templates: Applicant Tracking Systems have a hard time reading tables, graphics and templates and the information can be missed completely.

Feel free to submit a longer resume: An Applicant Tracking System doesn’t care if your resume is two pages or four. It is important for you to pack your resume with relevant experience, keywords and phrases that increase your chances of a higher total score.

- Integrate relevant keywords and phrases: Review the job posting in detail then incorporate keywords and phrases into your resume that are appropriate and accurate with our qualifications. It is important to incorporate the right keywords and phrases that are unique to the job description. Most job-seekers include the “obvious” keywords and phrases into their resumes but many applicant tracking systems assign a higher value to related keywords and phrases. In order to find the right keywords or search terms that will be highly valued by the Applicant Tracking System:
  - Review job postings for the type of position you’re seeking. Note specific keywords and phrases.
  - Analyze your current job descriptions to determine which keywords and phrases are applicable to your qualifications.
  - Review www.MyNextMove.org
  - Use Google’s Keyword tool to find keywords that make your resume more effective with Applicant Tracking Systems.
  - Review the Dictionary of Occupational Titles
  - Review the Occupational Outlook Handbook

Label your work experience, “Work Experience”: An Applicant Tracking System may completely skip over work experience because you labeled it “Professional Experience”, “Career Achievements”, or some other variation.

Format your work experience correctly: An Applicant Tracking System may reject a resume because the information is in the wrong place. When listing your work experience, start with your employer’s name, followed by your title then the dates you held that title.

Upload your resume: An Applicant Tracking System may give priority to resumes that are uploaded versus those that are copied and pasted in.

Most companies require hiring managers to assess the performance of employees at least annually. Annual reviews are generally formal in nature and result in a formal document submitted to HR and included in your personnel file. Take advantage of this feedback opportunity by meeting informally with your supervisor quarterly to obtain his/her counsel as well as to resolve any negative feedback. Meeting quarterly will prevent potential surprises in your supervisor’s assessment of your performance. Consider these tips:

Keep track of your accomplishments and make sure that they are incorporated into your weekly/monthly activity reports and your annual performance reviews
- Remember, the incorporation of your accomplishments, continuing education, and acquisition of new skill sets is a logical and professional way to become your own champion

Here are some questions to ask yourself as you start brainstorming areas for growth:

How do I want to grow in my job and in my career throughout the next year?
What are my strengths and weaknesses? (Perhaps you can refer to a performance review.)
What contributions and talents do I have that could benefit my team but aren’t being utilized?
How can I be more efficient?
How can I improve my interactions with co-workers?
How can I improve my customer relations?
Is there a new skill or certification I would like to obtain?
Is there a project I would like to lead or be a part of?

Once you have identified one or two goals for the next year, write them down or tell someone such as a supervisor or mentor. If a supervisor is aware of your improvement goals, they can be an invaluable resource in receiving new projects and taking advantage of internal professional development opportunities.

When you have reached your goals, don’t forget to record your accomplishments by updating your résumé. It’s important to always have an up-to-date résumé and it feels good to track the progress you’ve made.

Managing the Expectations & Demands of Difficult Supervisors

In every business, employees are challenged with the task of managing the expectations and/or demands of difficult supervisors. Using patience, long suffering, and business sense, you can find ways to win the day in these trying circumstances. Consider the following tips:

Maintain a positive and supportive open line of communications with your supervisor.
Document your supervisor’s expectations and/or demands.
Obtain your supervisor’s acknowledgement regarding your capture of his/her instruction.
Provide written reports to your supervisor as you complete/comply with his/her instruction either as formal reports or emails which will suffice in most instances.
If you find these demands exceed reason, request a meeting with your supervisor, express your concerns, obtain your supervisor’s feedback, and document the results.
Remember, the more you can accomplish one-on-one with your supervisor, the better the results as well as a more positive continuing relationship.
